I don't know why people find this picture disturbing. In my view it's a great picture, it shows a kid who's been helped by modern technology and medicine. It's beautiful & sad at the same time. But definitely not disturbing.
Oh I love this picture. I don't think the kid is being portrayed as a freak! My impression upon reading the article the picture was originally printed with was that he (the kid) took his "different legs for different activities" thing as a matter of practical course, which of course it is.
the kid is smiling. he obviously isn't upset by the fact that he's being aided by technology, much like anyone who takes medication, wears glasses, or buys groceries from a supermarket. his parents are simply documenting his progress through life and showing him through their actions that this particular uniqueness is something to be celebrated. i don't see how this picture could be any further from "disturbing".
It looks like the kid looks forward to his new legs more than a new bike at Christmas. Look at the cool colors on those things. He is not upset, why should anyone else be? Good going kid.

ReplyDeleteWhat's the nature of the observing gaze? If the observer is looking at the child like a sideshow freak, it's exploitative and disturbing.
